Flex-R on board with surf project
We are delighted to announce Flex-R’s involvement in a project to support the construction of a new clubhouse for St Ives Surf Club.
The not-for-profit community group was founded ten years ago to create a happy, safe and inclusive environment for local children who want to get involved in surfing.
As well as running its own lessons, such as the Kids’ Club on Porthmeor Beach, the club has forged very close links with the Wave Project, a local surf therapy charity that works with disabled and less-fortunate children. Some of the young people from the club regularly help at the sessions run by the Newquay-based project.
Flex-R is getting involved after the club was granted planning permission two years ago to demolish an old toilet block on Porthmeor car park and to replace it with a stylish new building. Key to the planning permission was keeping in context with the surroundings of neighbouring Tate St Ives, which adjoins the car park.
Work is well underway on the two-storey building, which will have hot showers and toilets, a kiosk serving refreshments and food, and storage facilities. On the first floor, there will be a clubhouse, including a disabled toilet and shower room and an office to be shared with the Wave Project. The local RNLI will also use the new clubhouse.
It’s nearly ready for the roof to be put on, and that’s where we come in. Summit Roofing Solutions will install our RubberBond FleeceBack Single Ply. This will provide excellent waterproofing for the roof of the clubhouse, which will face a range of weather conditions on the coast of Cornwall.

Our Area Sales Manager Thomas Forbes has been liaising with the club and Summit Roofing Solutions and said that Flex-R was delighted to be involved in such a great project.
“The club, which is run by volunteers, has worked tirelessly to get to the position where it is only a few months away from opening a brand-new facility, which will benefit its members and will be a focal point for the wider community,” said Thomas.
“Flex-R was delighted to get involved and donate materials – especially because we know that RubberBond is one of the most durable flat roofing products on the market and we know that it will withstand the elements and provide watertight protection for decades to come.”
Thomas will be providing regular updates on the progress of the project ahead of the grand opening in April 2019.
