Flex-R Highly Commended at SPRA Awards
Flex-R is celebrating after receiving a Highly Commended at the SPRA (Single Ply Roofing Association) Awards 2019.
We received the commendation in the Best Refurbishment category for the Leigh Spinners Mill project in Lancashire, where roofing contractor Permicoat installed our RubberBond® FleeceBack™ single ply.
Leigh Spinners Mill was opened in 1915 and was entered into the awards because it is a great example of the renovation of a heritage building where English Heritage took the advice of the roofing contractor – in conjunction with the technical support provided by us – to recommend materials that would improve the performance and longevity of the roof.
English Heritage is often very keen for renovation projects to reclaim and re-use as much of the original material as possible, but because the roof had started to leak, as the existing structure couldn’t cope with the volume of water, it was deemed more important to install a new covering that would preserve the rest of the building. English Heritage agreed with this recommendation.
Our Trading Director Duncan Winter is thrilled with the Highly Commended and said that the project shows that RubberBond® is just as suitable for refurbishments and restorations as it is on new roofs.
“We know that RubberBond® FleeceBack is the ideal solution for most new flat roofing installations, but what has delighted us most with Leigh Spinners Mill is English Heritage’s recognition that RubberBond® was the best system to ensure that the roof will remain water tight – and therefore key to preserving this fine old building for many years to come,” said Duncan.
“This commendation from the SPRA means a lot to Flex-R, as it’s great recognition for the RubberBond® system.”
Permicoat has been very complementary about RubberBond® and its Commercial Director, James Mattison explained why it was chosen for the project.
“The renovation on the mill was well overdue – especially in respect of waterproofing on the flat roof sections – and RubberBond FleeceBack was specified because of its durability and the fact that it comes with a 20-year guarantee,” he said. “It was easy to apply but what really stood out for us was the level of technical information and the readily available technical support offered by Flex-R, who made this project a pleasure to work on.”
Duncan added: “In many ways, the project was very straightforward for a contractor of Permicoat’s experience, and they were fantastic at chronicling the project, so they had lots of images to give a sense of the project at every stage.
“The final pictures and the drone footage are stunning and really show off RubberBond® to its very best.”
