Bangor Isycoed Village Hall
Overview:
The Village Hall in Bangor on Dee, located just outside Wrexham, serves as a community facility that residents use daily for various social activities. These activities include art, exercise, and sewing classes, as well as regular coffee mornings. The building’s original roof was over 30 years old; while it wasn’t leaking, it showed significant signs of wear and tear.
D Ferrari Roofing, a specialist roofing contractor, was contacted to assess the existing roof condition. Following their inspection, the roofing contractor recommended installing Flex-R ClassicBond instead of refelting the roof, as they had successfully fitted this product many times before. The ClassicBond EPDM membrane is a professional-grade option available in two thicknesses: 1.2mm and a premium 1.5mm. This product was particularly suitable for the project because the 97m² roof could be completed using a single piece of waterproofing membrane, eliminating the need for any joins. Overall, ClassicBond comes in a choice of widths, ranging from 3.05m to 9.15m, and lengths of up to 30.5m.
Work commenced on the roof, where the ClassicBond EPDM membrane was installed in a single piece onto new OSB sterling boards and adhered to the timber substrate using Sprayable Bonding Adhesive (SPB) throughout. This high-strength adhesive is specially formulated for gun application and is designed for quick bonding of EPDM membranes to various substrates. It simplifies the installation process and significantly reduces the overall time spent on both application and waiting for solvent flash-off.
ClassicBond EPDM PS RUSS (Reinforced Universal Secure Strip) was installed to the roof’s internal angle change of the lay board, where the flat roof meets the existing pitched roof. This base tie-in helps control the membrane’s movement and prevents it from pulling away from the roof’s perimeter and the upstand detail over time.
To finalise the installation, SureEdge Check Kerb Trims were installed to the perimeter to create a water check, and SureEdge Drip Trims were installed to the roof’s drip/gutter edge.
“The installation of the new roof went smoothly,” said Paul Petherbridge, Manager at D Ferrari Roofing. “Although the weight of the rubber at that size, did cause slight issues getting it onto the roof, we had a team of five to handle it, so it was manageable. The entire project was completed in 10 days, and our customer was delighted with the result.”
*EPDM-Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer is a synthetic rubber material increasingly used in the construction industry. It is durable and flexible and can withstand extreme temperatures, UV radiation, and weathering, making it ideal for use in roofing.
*OSB-Oriented Strand Board. A versatile, structured wood panel made from waterproof heat-cured adhesives and rectangular-shaped wood strands arranged in cross-orientated layers. The panels share many of the strength and performance characteristics of plywood.
